THURSDAY, 12/30:
5:30PM, MADE IN DANGENHAM
The feisty, funny female workers at Dagenham’s Ford factory in the UK don’t fit the clichés of 1960s revolutionaries. But when almost 200 of them went on strike in 1968 to fight for equal rights and pay, it was a watershed moment in labor history. Director Nigel Cole (Calendar Girls) has turned their triumphant story into a vibrant, uplifting film, with a stellar cast including Miranda Richardson, Bob Hoskins, Geraldine James, and Rosamund Pike. Led by the tireless Rita O’Grady (a marvelous Sally Hawkins), this fearless group of women gives a delightful twist to the classic David versus Goliath dynamic. Enlivened by period music, costumes, and setting, Made in Dagenham celebrates the spirited determination of a few brave enough to challenge and change their times. 8:15PM, BIUTIFUL
In the long-awaited follow-up to his Academy Award®-winning Babel, Alejandro González Iñárritu delivers a transcendent and melancholy exploration of fatherhood, guilt, love, and mortality. A departure from the director’s penchant for large casts and multiple storylines, Biutiful puts an intimate focus on Uxbal (an excellent Javier Bardem), who lives on the margins of society, in the dangerous underworld of modern Barcelona. With a dark past and an only slightly less shady present, Uxbal roams the city streets seeking redemption as he contemplates an uncertain future. Above all, his love for his children brightens this otherwise dark path. Rich with ambiguity, contradictions, and lyricism-and filmed in González Iñárritu’s native Spanish-Biutiful is a tour de force that takes us on a unique and compelling journey down the rocky road of human existence. FRIDAY, 12.31:
5:30PM, THE COMPANY MEN
Bobby Walker (Ben Affleck) is living the American dream-great job, beautiful family, shiny Porsche in the garage-until corporate downsizing pulls the rug out from under him. Along with former colleagues Phil Woodward (Chris Cooper) and Gene McClary (Tommy Lee Jones), Bobby embarks on a path well trodden in today’s economy, where roles must be redefined amid shifting loyalties and strained family bonds. He finds himself enduring enthusiastic life coaching and building houses for his brother-in-law (Kevin Costner), which he deems beneath his executive skill set. But might there be more to life than chasing the bigger, better deal? In his feature film debut, director-writer John Wells (“ER,” “The West Wing”) delivers a no-holds-barred portrayal of men coming to terms with a reality they once thought inconceivable. 8:15PM, BLACK SWAN
Natalie Portman gives a career-defining performance as Nina, a ballerina completely consumed by her profession in Darren Aronofsky’s (The Wrestler) stunning new psychological thriller. Artistic director Thomas Leroy (Vincent Cassel) wants to replace his prima ballerina (Winona Ryder) in “Swan Lake,” the opening production of the new season. Nina is his first choice, but she has competition: a new dancer, Lily (Mila Kunis). The classic ballet requires a dancer who can play both the White Swan with innocence and grace, and the Black Swan, who represents guile and sensuality. As the rivalry between the two dancers morphs into a twisted friendship, Black Swan takes a thrilling, and at times terrifying, journey through the psyche of a young ballerina as she becomes increasingly, and eerily, perfect for the role of the duplicitous swan queen. SATURDAY, 1/1:
3:15PM, THE ILLUSIONIST
This beautifully realized animation from Sylvain Chomet (The Triplets of Belleville) is based on an unproduced script, written in the late 1950s by French filmmaker Jacques Tati for his daughter. A delightful blend of Tati’s masterful deadpan humor and Chomet’s distinctive artistic sensibility, the enchanting story follows an aging magician whose livelihood is threatened by emerging forms of entertainment like rock and roll. When he meets a spunky yet naïve Scottish girl who believes in the magic of his craft, he goes to great lengths to sustain the illusion that benefits them both. Chomet’s gift for hand-drawn figures, a stunningly impressionistic palette, and a vivid attention to light make this film a true piece of art. Encapsulating a journey from innocence to experience and of a fading way of life, The Illusionist lovingly portrays the bond between two dreamers. 5:30PM, THE TEMPEST
Renowned for her wonderfully inventive works for stage and screen, Julie Taymor (The Lion King, Across the Universe) brings her considerable visionary talents to Shakespeare’s late, great mystical romance and potent tale of revenge and forgiveness. Exiled to a remote island, magician Prospera (the extraordinary Helen Mirren), wronged Duchess of Milan, orchestrates spirits, monsters, a grief-stricken king, a wise old councilor, two treacherous brothers, and a storm at sea in a conspiracy to settle a score and restore herself and her daughter Miranda to their rightful positions. With a cast that includes Alfred Molina, Russell Brand, David Strathairn, Alan Cumming, Ben Whishaw, and Felicity Jones, this sumptuous adaptation is a spellbinding feast for the eyes and soul. (USA, 110 min., PG-13, Print courtesy of Touchstone Pictures) Click here to view the trailer.
8:15PM, SOMEWHERE
Actor Johnny Marco (Stephen Dorff) is a staple of the tabloids-living at Hollywood’s Chateau Marmont, aimlessly cruising L.A. in his Ferrari, plying himself with a constant stream of women and pills. He’s coolly narcissistic and comfortably numb until the unexpected arrival of his 11-year-old daughter (Elle Fanning), who considers her father’s excesses with wise-beyond-her-years irony. In her newest feature, writer-director Sofia Coppola (Lost in Translation, Marie Antoinette) provides a witty, moving, and empathetic take on the hazards of celebrity. As Johnny’s past and present suddenly collide, he struggles to resolve that most universal of conundrums: Which life path marks his true calling? Winner of the Venice Film Festival’s Golden Lion, Somewhere provides a discerning insider’s guided tour of one man’s journey of self-discovery.
